Community Mentors

Here is a list of people in our homelearning community who are willing to provide free workshops, tours, and individual support to home learners. To find resources to support home learning parents, please click here.

Academics 
  • Can offer workshops or individual learning support in the following subjects: English, mathematics (not calculus), general sciences, chemistry, physics, biology, essay writing, researching, etc. 

Biology 
  • PhD in biochemistry and teaches biology at U Vic 
  • Can talk about Undergrad, and Grad school experience with any older kids interested in this field. 
  • Will offer a fall 2011 workshop on “What Goes on Inside a Cell” 
  • May be able to arrange a lab tour at U Vic 

Career Research, Resume Creation and Job Hunting

Carpentry and Woodworking 
Geoffram Matthias and Kinkade: Phoenix Carpentry Inc, 250 217 8373 
  • We have a good shop with every tool you can think of and lots of different materials. If one or two kids want to come out and spend an hour or several hours making things, Kinkade and I would be glad to have them. What the kids get to do depends a lot on how careful they are and how well they listen. There is no age limit. Older kids with a keen interest could learn carpentry/building skills as well. We're on West Saanich by the Red Barn Market. The simplest thing for me is to call and arrange to stop by for a visit and see where it goes. 
  • Available to discuss the career of carpentry with someone that is considering it. I've been a carpenter for 22 years, employed carpenters for 9 years and have trained several apprentices. 

Creative Writing 
  • I write novels for children and teens; am a creative writing instructor for adults and kids. I can offer creative writing workshops for groups of home schoolers aged 9-18 and one on one chats with children and teens to answer any questions about the craft and business of writing fiction etc. 

Electrical Engineering 
  • Electrical Engineer, Combat Systems Engineer/Naval Officer 2. 
  • Can offer tours on a naval ship (occasionally the sub too), one on one chats with parent or child to answer any questions or help direct in any way. 

Health Topics: Nutrition, Cooking, Weight Training 
  • Available for workshops, seminars, lectures, consultation, one-on-one, email support and phone conversations. 

Humanities 
  • Could offer a seminar in following areas: literature, film, cultural topics, politics of women's spirituality, history, etc. 

Mechanics

Medicine

  • Radiologist. 
  • Will offer a fall 2011 workshop on X-rays and medical imaging 
  • Available to talk to teens considering careers in medicine 

Psychology and Human Development 
  • Available for workshops, seminars, lectures, consultation, one-on-one, email support and phone conversations. 

Public Speaking, Performance Rehearsal and Memory Techniques 
  • Available for workshops, seminars, lectures, consultation, one-on-one, email support and phone conversations. 

Social Work 
  • I am former social worker/counselor and U Vic social work instructor (1995-2007). Can talk to teens considering a career in the social work field. 

Volunteer Work 
  • We can arrange a tour for a group of kids to see the Compassionate Resource Warehouse and learn about the work the organization does sending supplies to developing countries. 

Yoga and acroyoga
